Maybe a cool idea, if he is still nameless, asking the community for ideas and shortly before the release make a poll. Hey Devs, wouldn't you like to make it official.

Well, the technician is you isn't it? So typically it would be called your gamer tag.

To me he kinda seems like a Fred. I'm not opposed to Bob though, in recognition of Bob, also Bob the Builder, and Bob's my uncle lol.

the player should remain nameless/genderless. it's up to the user to fill in that info.

It's always been my impression that the game deliberately sets up a featureless protagonist, an ambiguous person in a suit that's strongly implied to be you personally. Put another way, there isn't actually a player character; the outfit in the center of the screen contains the player him/herself.
