Tighter S-curve rails

Post by Factoruser »

Currently, an S-curve connection requires a distance of 2 rails between the connected rail stretches. But you should be able to connect 2 parallel rail stretches with a distance of just 1 rail. Less / no space between is not necessary, because you'll need space for signals.

Added to viewtopic.php?f=80&t=19953 New types of rails (curves, s-curves ...)
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

The conversion of crafting multiple rail types to using the rail planner means that it's now possible to have these other form factors of rails. I agree that adding 1- and 2- block shifts would be a good idea, and quite useful.

I disagree that shifting by one isn't useful though: there are many situations beyond parallel tracks where that feature would be useful: avoiding an obstacle, switching from 2-gap to 1-gap tracks, and so on.

Agree, but it's all much work, these S-curves are in principle a new type of rail, running in new diagonal angles. The connection would be longer too, while the 2 gap connection is 7 rail tiles long, the 1 gap connection should be 9 tiles long and the 0-gap might be even 11 tiles long.

This can be combined with a maximum speed per bridged gap.

0 gap - no slow down
..
2 gap 50% slow down else the train would flip off the track on s-lining

Well, this is from a long time ago. Any word on getting the ability to switch rails that are closer together?
The way it is now leads to some really awkward looking designs.

All my rail designs have a 2 track width gap (4 tiles) between them. I don't have most of the issues that many people seem to have.

But I would still appreciate some kind of 1 tile side shift S bends.

I like the idea. This is also how it is implemented in OpenTTD. The tighter the curve, the lower the maximum speed.
