If all trains run in automatic mode, it isn't possible to crash. That's the sense of them and I mean this is useful. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)
It's recommended to drive in automatic mode, too. And I recommend also the wiki for the signals, because there may be some surprises for you.

If all your trains are in automatic mode, good placement of signals will allow you to run more trains at the same time, because they can run in different parts of the same network. There can only be one automatic train in a block, and blocks are separated by signals.
Bad placement of signals might cause trains to get stuck, but they won't crash.
