Auto Research is a mod that automates research, no more need to Press t to start a new research. The mod will automatically start researching a new technology when the research for the previous technology is finished. Which technology the mod chooses to research is explained at the mod portal.

I recommend also installing the Research Queue mod (relevant forum thread). Research Queue takes precedence* over Auto Research, so you can use Research Queue to research the stuff you want now, and let Auto Research handle researching the other technologies when you're busy with something else.

Auto Research comes with a short list of "prioritized technologies". Users can modify this list that can be found in config.lua, but it's not recommended if you play multiplayer games. Currently this list contains Automation, Logistics, Steel Processing, Oil Processing, Fluid Handling, Advanced Material Processing and Lab Research Speed (1-4). The idea with this list is to give the player technologies you pretty much always want as early as possible (with the exception of Lab Research Speed, which is added so research the player later starts manually will be more efficient). If there are some technologies you feel should be in this list as default, then this thread is a good place to suggest it (I may however disagree with you).

* Both Auto Research and Research Queue listen for the same event and starts a new research during that event. However, it seems like mods are executed in alphabetic order, so Research Queue overwrites whatever Auto Research tried to start researching (immediately, no science packs will be wasted on researching the technology Auto Research chooses before Research Queue starts researching another technology). I use both mods and have not experienced any problems.
