[Poll] How should the enemies be called?
Re: possible names for "the enemy"
Let's think logical.
They are bugs-like animals, living on the surface or ground of a planet. It's their native planet.
Under normal circumstances it is common to call that creatures like the planets name.
For example: If we would find animals (or life) on Mars we would call that life alltogether "Marsians" or "Marsian life-form"...
Or take Ganymede, they would be called Ganymedians.
So the question to the enemies name is the same question as to the planets name.
The problem is: We don't know the name of that planet.
If we would know it, we would know at the same time the "name of the enemy".
EDIT: So I suggest: As longs as we don't have a planet name we keep them as "natives".

Re: possible names for "the enemy"
As confusing as it may be, I think of them collectively as "Biters"
Re: possible names for "the enemy"
They're all biters. The spitters just digest you from a distance.

Re: possible names for "the enemy"
Also not so correct. We have biters, spiters, worms, in different sizes. It's common to call them biters, cause they are the worst thread.5thHorseman wrote:As confusing as it may be, I think of them collectively as "Biters"
It would be easy, if they had their own name, something like with the bird "cuckoo", which are named by the sound it is doing; humans did that thousands of years.
For Factorio that would be names like "Rooarre", "Wrrii", "Chrokk", "Rararraw" ... could find names the whole day, I just heard the in-game-samples, we need just many "rr", "kk", "w"....
Hm. I like that kind of "sound-name", cause it is natural naming things like so and also neutral.

Re: possible names for "the enemy"
I'm curious, I've heard this name around the forums and on Reddit before, in fact I seem to recall a mod named after it (Infinite Nauvis or something, basically a 'newgame +' mod that regenerates the map with the current player character, sans anything that uses iron as a component). What's its origin?steinio wrote:Nauvis?

How about Navi(s)?
Always fun to kill those.
Natives
Skitters
Anthropods
Anthroids
Bugs
Hostiles
The Enemy
Insects
Insectoids
I suppose most of this is rather generic, but whatever.
I refer to them as Biters, and each and every time, waste several seconds thinking of how to refer to them to include spitters.

Re: possible names for "the enemy"
Oh, I looked first on different search engines, which showed me, that this name is often used in mods and in this forum ( search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keywords=nauvis ).Mattyrogue wrote:I'm curious, I've heard this name around the forums and on Reddit before, in fact I seem to recall a mod named after it (Infinite Nauvis or something, basically a 'newgame +' mod that regenerates the map with the current player character, sans anything that uses iron as a component). Digging deeper you come the point, that it is the name of the base-surface.
https://wiki.factorio.com/index.php?tit ... d_entities
Code: Select all
find_entities
Returns a table with all the entities in the given area
Parameters:
area - Search area Types/AABB
Returns: Lua/table of Lua/Entity
game.surfaces["name-of-surface"].find_entities{{-10, -10}, {10, 10}} --Surface is: nauvis if it's the base game surface.
So, if Nauvis is the name of the base game surface, then it is the name of the planet. And - logically - Nauvisians the name of the creatures on that surface.
So much to "Making facts by creating code"...

Re: possible names for "the enemy"
I call them "biters" in the Let's Play, but outside of the YouTube world they get called "Graboids" because Tremors = funny, terrible, B movie about aliens.

Re: possible names for "the enemy"
For most of Factorio's history, there were just biters around (and stationary organic buildings), so most people still call all of them biters.
Other common terms are aliens/natives/enemies, but these are very general terms.

So are we villain protagonists?
We come to their world, terraform the surroundings into an environment that suits us, slaughter the natives wholesale and harvest the remains of their nurseries to fuel further advancement of pollution and destruction.
Eventually we will have stripped the planet of all resources and committed genocide against the natives for attempting to stop us from destroying their world.

Re: So are we villain protagonists?
Reminds me of a movie I saw, forgot the name.
To be honest, this sounds oddly familiar. I wonder if that happened in history before

Re: So are we villain protagonists?
Come on! Factorio is perfect America simulator! Build walls and kill aliens to lay your hands on the oil. And of course pollute everything!
Re: So are we villain protagonists?
We crashlanded on their planet and instead of providing emergency aid they immediatley try to kill us on sight. Through their unwarranted aggression we are forced to buld up an industrial base to ensure our own survival. We are just acting in self defense.
You can always look at it from this side.

I agree, but I felt both topics shared enough similarities so that anything said in one of them would be reelant in the other too.featherwinglove wrote:There's a difference between "villain" and "alien" buddyKoub wrote:[Koub] Topic merged into older one.
