I mean seriously, I've been trying for over 2 hours just to get a simple a map with a decent sized starting area and all 4 elements without having to start fighting biters bare handed...
It was about a year since I played a free mode map, and been waiting for the next minor version update ever since. How is it supposed to work now, must be so frustrating for new players trying to build a base without iron, copper, coal or even stone?
Anyone know how I fix this for 0.13.x? Please help me if you know any good enough seed or tips that is tested and works for sure, because I am really giving up.
I wouldn't ask if I had plenty of time, but I can not spend the few hours I have in a week for just starting the game.
Extra big hug to the person that finds a solution that does not involve using an old version! And achievements must also work!
Map generation? [0.13.9]
Re: Map generation? [0.13.9]
New players are not recommended to play 0.13 yet, that is why it is a separate "experimental" branch on Steam. If you're not willing to deal with bugs and rapid changes to the game then you may want to go back to the stable 0.12 version.
For 0.13 I can tell you that playing with RSO mod works just fine for me and I believe it will always give you exactly one of each resource type in the starting area.

This is quite a high expectation for an experimental alpha release of a game, but perhaps someone else has a simple map seed to offer.xng wrote:Extra big hug to the person that finds a solution that does not involve using an old version! And achievements must also work!

Thank you for trying to help! *tiny hug as a consolation price*Kelderek wrote: ...This is quite a high expectation for an experimental alpha release of a game, but perhaps someone else has a simple map seed to offer.xng wrote:Extra big hug to the person that finds a solution that does not involve using an old version! I can see it is high expectation to be able to use the "New game" button in game to create a game that is playable in Factorio after wasting so much time trying. In other games the basics normally works, like starting a game and then just play, even though there might be some other edge case gamebreaking bug for short while until it is fixed. As the time to stabilize version increases exponentially here and the last one took about a year I don't really want to wait until 2018 to play with the fixes for rails and other UI enhancements.
And to be honest I have no idea what RSO is and while wikipedia says Radiation Safety Officer or Registered Sex Offender I'm sure it is none of those things.

Give this exchange string a try:

I used it on 0.13.0 to start a new world. within a few steps it has iron, coal, stone, and copper. There is some oil not too far away to the west.

I also found out what the RSO meant, (Resource Spawn something) it is findable on mods.factorio.com or ingame mods for those looking.
Just looking quickly at map made me realize I wanted some more resources though and with RSO I got that plus I can still play the same nice terrain. I have not decided yet and have no time right now to play, but I could either go for kind of sparse resources on the iron side but still get achievements, or use RSO to get a more balanced amount and not get achievements.
Thanks again for responding and helping!
Re: Map generation? [0.13.9]
the vanilla resources weren't horrible for me on that map. I do have a world with RSO currently. it takes a bit more work to get to the good patches of resources compared to vanilla, but once you have ventured far enough out, it's a lot less hopping from spawn to spawn.
I suggest playing through on vanilla first, get the achievements, then go crazy with mods if that's something you want to experience.

Re: Map generation? [0.13.9]
I will try without mod first, but I am not new to the game by any stretch of the imagination, I have hundreds of hours under my belt and I made many small mods for myself to make the game more convenient. But anyway, that was over a year ago now, time to jump into the fray and learn anew!Cisien wrote:the vanilla resources weren't horrible for me on that map. Re: Map generation? [0.13.9]
Found another really good map exchange string, when testing around a bit, someone might like it:
>>>AAANAAkAAgADAAYAAAAEAAAAY29hbAMFBQoAAABjb3BwZXItb3Jl
AwUFCQAAAGNydWRlLW9pbAMFBQoAAABlbmVteS1iYXNlAwEDCAAAAGl

<
You can change biter settings and starting area size without affecting how the terrain looks and from that set the difficulty.
I know there is a pinned thread about exchange strings, but it isn't maintained so it is riddled with old non-working strings.

Re: Map generation? [0.13.9]
Map generation has indeed changed with 0.13 and is still very experimental. Even if priority is always given to gamebreaking bugs, it's not forgotten.
There *should* be some changes with next minor version, which we all hope will solve the problems that appeared with 0.13.
