The copper cable one looks like it would be confusing next to a similar icon for just-red and just-green wires

That's the first thing I thought as well. Also, when zoomed out, it doesn't really bring cable to mind - it just looks like a green line and a red line.

The gear is good. The other ones are OK. (IMO)

Chenged the cable colours.
All the icons that are used in interface are also the "sprites" of the game materials objects.
And the limit in size is 32x32 pixels for those items.
Also the interface looks very small in full hd monitors.
Would be a good improvement a larger interface, different incons for interface and game objects.
and maybe a larger grid size. As i see, all the gaming graphic structure is based on a grid made of 32x32 squares.
You can see it pausing the game. (shift +spacebar)
Do non know how much work is needed to switch at least at 64x64 grid size.
But with a gigantic map size as normally we have, it would be a good quality graphic improvement.

Sorry, but when someone tells me "copper wire" I think to blank, unisolated copper wires.

In factorio they are called copper cables.
But to be cables they would need plastic in the recipe...
And to get plastic you need cables... So I guess is better for them to be wires.

Ok, right it's cable. But it must be wire... :)

For the production process:

This is of course for steel cable, but for copper it looks somehow equally:

This thick cable is then dragged into wire. Look for copper wire production.

The end product is bound to bundles. The bundles are in my opinion, what it should look like. It might also look a bit like the hot wires on the belts...

Make the cable thicker on the spool. So instead of seeing 20+ turns we see 5-10.
