Is this a terror game?

Post by horrorizer »

All the soundtrack tell that, my 12 years old niece, says she cannot see me playing this because of the dark environment and the scary music, frequent nights with creatures attacking.
basically this game scare the shit out on innocent creatures.

Now only on curiosity if someone knows the answer, what the developers had in mind when asked for a soundtrack like this to the compositor?

See you as incapable of playing, because you're more innocent than your 12 years old sister(presumably, you're older)?

The game is kinda dark and scary, yes. Similar to Minecraft actually, I've always found it weird how many kids love that game, it scared the crap out of me on several occasions. Then again I guess the Doom generation wasn't any better in that regard :D

As for what the developers were thinking, I'm pretty sure there is a blogpost out there where they explain that the music is meant to reinforce that atmosphere of solitude on a barren planet, while not being particularly intrusive since you do have to think, that's why it's so subtle. Might be creepy to some though.

However if you see this as an issue and want to play with kids, I'd recommend looking into ways to remove biters from the map altogether (peaceful mode still spawns them, they just don't attack). And there's nothing easier than turning the music off, there are plenty of sliders in the sound options. Assembly machine orchestra is all the music you need anyway :) And remember, there are lamps in the game, and they're quite potent. If you place them all around your factory, it's quite easy to ignore the day/night cycle.

EDIT: Here's the post.

I think you'll find a very large majority of kids play Minecraft in creative mode. Infinite blocks, no mobs. As opposed to survival mode, which can be "scary". That said, you could always play Factorio without aliens and with the music turned off...

I actually have the music turned off. But not because it's spooky, just because I like to watch videos while playing (yay dual screen).

Consider ending this relationship so you can continue playing factorio in peace.

I absolutely ADORE the music. Its a unique style.
The whole game has got a dark mood setting. The player is basically a ruthless alien, destroying the enviroment and killing the locals.

As a composer myself I find the soundtrack works very well. It has a good mix of rhythmic and inventive themes, and also contrasts such with slow and "creepy" movements. The mix of acoustic instruments and sci-fi-style synths in the pallet work well with the gameplay. If more music is added I hope it follows close with the themes and pallet as they are currently spot on.

Tl;dr- The music is perf

I really love the very dark theme of factorio. It reminds me of fallout 1 & 2, and it feels scary to me because of that.

It's scary within its context. It's not horror-suspense or jump-scare scary.

But I had cleared out all the nearby biter nests, and gotten involved in building a big research station. Which led me to making a big petroleum station. Which made me run out of power, so I made a big power station. And then the stuff for a solar station.

And I wasn't paying attention... the biters were spawning closer and closer. Finally, I noticed I had lost power. I went to check on my power station and it was completely destroyed.

Somehow I didn't notice that little flashy alert saying YOU ARE IN DANGER YOU FOOL. (I play without sound usually.) The biters had destroyed my infrastructure. There were dozens of them.

I tried to rebuild... but they kept coming faster than I could remake what they'd torn down.

That is the horror of Factorio -- watching your all your works crumble to dust, helpless to prevent it.

Well, under the game's setting, there is probably supposed to be a minor level of fear due to the large numbers of bug-like lifeforms that are out to chew the meat from your bones, as you've crash landed on the planet and the rest of your crew is dead as Simcity 5
