Its a android, plain and simple intended to have issueable/programmable commands (like the train) to perform/automate tasks (or assembly).

Objective? To have similar features to autonomy and maintenance, when you just cant be in two places at once.

We've all heard of the game The Sims, well in the Sims 3 Plumb bots were upgrade-able and did many different things, consider something along these lines.

Story: "Well when i crashed, i hadn't realized how dependent i was on the androids, they really did help operations run smoothly"

This is already supported by the game more or less well and there are some mods, that use this like FARL, Something with a radar (I always forget it) and Uplink station.
