Oil barrels

As far as I know, they are very expensive.

What are the used for?

What happens if I shoot barrels with oil?

Barrel is an experiment to see if "packaging" can be useful for oil.

Basically:

Steel -> Empty Barrel (assembling machine)
Empty Barrel + Crude Oil -> Full Barrel (chemical plant)
Full Barrel -> Crude Oil + Empty Barrel (chemical plant)

This way you can transport the oil with your trains for instance. Barrels can be used for crude oil only, not its fractions - basically it is just an item with those 3 recipes above.

I actually like it. I don't know how 'useful' it is vs simply pumping, however it does create a neat way of making oil somewhat mobile while still keeping its 'liquid' feel.

IMO we should eventually get train oil tanks to pump it in and out of the train as opposed to putting oil in barrels and then putting those barrels on the train.

Yup, crude oil barrel (and the empty barrel) are both just regular items. You can use belts, trains and logistic robots to transport them, they can go into inventory, etc.

IMO we should eventually get train oil tanks to pump it in and out of the train as opposed to putting oil in barrels and then putting those barrels on the train.

But is it really reasonable to transport barrels with oil via belt instead of using pipes?

I find it useless to transport oil with pipes, for long distances, use trains.

Its all about the logistics bots, i can get oil from my fields, train it across great distances, and then from my deliveries yard i have my logistics network deliver it to my refinery.
