Noticed something that seemed a bit odd while I was trying to tech directly to logistics on a new game: logistics robotics unlocks passive provider chests, construction robotics unlocks passive and storage provider chests, and the logistic system tech unlocks active provider chest and requester chest.
Why do the two robotics techs only unlock the passive provider chest? It can't move items to storage, so unless it can be used by construction robots, it's basically useless until requester chests are unlocked. It also seems a bit off that logistic robotics, which requires at least two kinds of chests to function, only unlock one type. On the other hand, construction robots only require a storage chest to function properly.
Would it make more sense to have logistic robotics unlock active and storage chests, construction robotics to unlock just storage chests, and the logistic system tech to unlock passive and requester chests?
Research Logistics Chest Unlocks
Re: Research Logistics Chest Unlocks
I noticed the same. Probably both should unlock passive provider and storage chest as without storage chest you can't use logistic trash slots. The passive provider is basically a reduced-functionality storage chest (in the sense it won't accept anything) so it wouldn't make much sense to unlock the storage chest and not unlock the passive provider at the same time.
Re: Research Logistics Chest Unlocks
It would make more sense to have only one technology 'Logistic Network' which unlocks passive, active, storage and requester chest.
The smart chest could be researched with smart inserters...
I always find it annoying only get the passive provider with the first tier of logistic research.

You *are* the second chest (the requester) when you unlock logistics robots.

This. Having just red chests and logistic bots is useful because whatever is in the red chests can be delivered to the player on request.silverkitty23 wrote:You *are* the second chest (the requester) when you unlock logistics robots.

Still, depending on what order you unlock things in, there are holes.
Imagine you don't research the construction robotics, or the logistics system that gives you the requester chest, only logistics, then you research logistic trash slots... what do the bots do? I mean, there's nowhere to put the trash!
And even if you did research the logistics system, but still no construction robots... well, there's still no storage chest!

Re: Research Logistics Chest Unlocks
1. afaik 0.13 removes smart chest at all
2. requester chests are superior to storage chest in a sense that all your factory crate outputs don't get messed up with random items put together in them, making controlling reserves via red-cell-marking useless. storage chests are good only for deconstruction and logistic trash. by the way it would be good to have some sort of mixed requester-storage chest which is limited to one single item type. so when you put 100 steel into logistic trash slot, it goes to that belt-output chest instead of random storage chest on the map, thus increasing reserves in the network above what you'd like to reserve. of course the other solution is to put smart inserter near assembly machine outputs, but that renders red-cell marking useless
3. it would also be nice to get logistic network at green science level for producing blue bottles without requester chests requires a very long belt wasting a lot of heavy items on it. or you have to run with items locally until you get it researched. same stands for energy distribution 2 (power station) because roboports frequently come with need for solar power. With current research setup I have to carry like 250 steel/red-circuits/smart-inserters/betteries via inventory to get those researched first.
