I've thought about this frequently playing and I think there should be a splitter implemented into the game that is capable of reversing the new lane the splitter splits into.
That might sound a bit confusing as i'm not the most concise person, But I think there should be a splitter where the new lane that it splits off into goes the opposite direction of the lane it's connected to, But the original lane keeps going the same way.
This would provide the ability for new more efficient layouts.

Re: The Diverge Splitter
I've used this setup several times and others. I just think that this type of splitter would be useful as it would take less space and require less time to make something that should be simpleMaybe this setup helps:

Re: The Diverge Splitter
The question is not to use less time, but to have fun.
Saying yes to this suggestion means also to say yes to the nearly 100 other suggestions about belts. It makes no sense to have so many belt types in the game.

Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.
