No Path on railway, but can manually drive?

I'll post this here, rather than the bug section because i'm still new to the game and this could just be something I'm missing.

I have created a loop for my first railway, with 3 stations along the way. I can manually drive the train along this loop with no issue, but as soon as i set the stations in the list and tell it to go i get told there's no path found. As soon as the message appears, the train and it's carriage becomes unusable. Inserters won't remove or load in the carriage, and i can't manually drive any more (although i can still interact and get inside, it just won't move). I have to remove the train for the carriage to be responsive again. Once i place the train down again it re-attaches to the carriage and can be manually driven again.

This seems to me like a bug. The path is clearly there and working because i can manually drive the complete loop. There is only 1 single loop track, nothing complicated. The stations are all facing the right way. Somehow the game doesn't recognise the track as a complete loop? I've destroyed sections and rebuilt to try to refresh it. What am i missing? Is this a known issue? I was really enjoying the game up until this point and I've been stuck trying to fix it for hours.

Never mind, it seems like "put the station on the right" was terrible advice. You have to look at the yellow arrows on the track when you put the station down.

you can put the train baxck in manual mode by clicking the little arrow/ "||" button in the gui.
