Hey all,
First, I'd like to say that I'm a complete scrub at modding. I've got an idea and would like to get somebody to help me turn it into reality. Here's the concept:

I want to create an item router, say to start a 3x3 setup. So, you've got a building (think of the assembler building) with three belts going in one side and three belts coming out the other. I don't want to gum it all up with inserters, I want just belts entering a building object and belts leaving. When you select the building, rather than giving you a choice of what to build, it brings up an interface that allows you to route things on the incoming belts to the outgoing belts.

Example: (2) Belts coming in: One with Iron & Coal, the other with both sides loaded with copper. I want to put (3) belt outputs. One with coal (side 'A' only), one with Iron/Copper and one with Copper/Iron. I could click on each incoming belt position and then select it's outgoing belt position(s). If there is more than one output, then the system would start dividing things up evenly.

Does anybody have any thoughts? Interest in helping? Has this already been done somewhere? Any info I can get would be great. Like I say, I'm new to this modding stuff, but I've got some ideas and want some help.

i understand what you want- it can be achieved on a 2-in-2-out scale with smart/fast inserters. for example, routing iron and copper through the same chest:

Well, the 3x3 setup can be actually implemented with inserters from that customizable inserter mod.

Generally, this is what usually requested under name of filter splitter.
Devs say they don't want to add complex buildings for purposes achievable with already existing simple ones.
In a mod that would probably end up being a bunch of invisible inserters spawned accoring to settings in the gui. Or a short range resurrection of that telebelt mod, though this is would not be particularly performance-friendly, and I'm not certain the new transport belt model will allow that.
I do mods. Modding wiki is friend, it teaches how to mod. Api docs is friend too...
I also update mods, some of them even work.
Recently I did a mod tutorial.
