Hello, this has to be the stable version finally

• Features:
  • Land mines can be rebuilt by the construction robots.
  Bugfixes:
  • Fixed crash when player closed the container while moving away from it.
  • Fixed incorrect registration/unregistration of train stop/rail signal/lab in ghost mode.
  • Fixed bug that allowed the player to put 4.3G items into the empty reserved (filtered) slot in the quickbar.
  • Fixed train waiting time (changed time multiplier from 1 back to 5).

Really? I got so used to defending my bases before repairs were implemented that I just dont need roboports for anything until the late game as supplemental repair services. Manufacturing more laser turrets when mine got destroyed never bothered me. I dont use the dreaded "logistics" chests, conveyor belts work better in my opinion because you arnt putting resources directly into the devices that need them, so you are still bottlenecked by robot arms.
Anyway, lets ignore all that and hopefully all the bugs are done and you devs can quit procrastinating and change the face of factorio with the OIL UPDATE. BLACK GOLD. TEXAS TEA.

Hmmm is it really called the Texas Tea colloquially? Anyway I am just adding the new mining drill entity for the crude oil. The question is how should it be called and how should it look. We were thinking about getting inspired by the pumpajcks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumpjack). So it can end up looking like in Texas ...

Why not. Pumpjacks are such a simple construction, they must be universal. You can view thousands of pics, they look all the same.

But then this thought (inspired by malokin - don't ask!) comes up:

People get caught all the time spending too much time in the milking house without cows. What in the hell did you mean i gave you the idea? Heck, Thats not even one of the industrial models, thats just a little mobile milker for filling a small pot while out in the dairy cow fields, you should see the industrial models . The automatic building of land mines is pretty nice, but I still think a few laser turrets are a more reliable and cheaper defense mechanism. ^^

That is what is used in texas today. The tall oil platforms. There are even reality TV shows in America about the people that work on these rigs and about how dangerous they are even today. (the oil corporations pay off OSHA to have safety standards lowered, its really sad and it is the only industry where safety regulations have lowered over the years instead of standards being raised like in every other industry).

In real life, "pumpjacks" as you call them are mainly used for really shallow resource collection. I've seen pumpjacks all over Michigan and the great lakes area but they are used to pump methane or propane or natural gas. People get sick of having a truck deliver the gas they use for home heating, hot water heaters, and even power generation so they buy their own pumpjack with a propane pig hooked to it (the big pill sized tanks).

When "the grid goes down" (joking obviously) the people that have pump jacks in their back yard will still have heat, hot water, and electricity. No road back to civilization necessary.

edit: i dont care what the model looks like tho, pumpjack, oil drilling platform, same difference, HECK, id take those flat images you all used to use if it gets me this update faster!

Oil derrics are primarily used for drilling holes in the ground to reach oil in the first place. It is true they are also capable of outputing oil but only at start when oil inside unergound oil pocket is still under presure.
But once that presure drops, oil rigs are usually dissasembled and replaced with Pumpjacks. Pumpjacks then pump up the remaining oil.
Sometimes before placing pumpjacks they still try to get more aditional oil out using oil derrics by atifitially creating presure in oil pocket (pumping in air or sometimes even water). But this can be potentionally quite dangerous as it forces natural gas to come out. There is no guarantee that natural gas will come out at oli derrick. It could come out anywhere. So this makes whole area a potential natural gas explosion hazard.

You'd be right if it were the 70's. Pump jacks used to be a really common but today something called a christmas tree is used (don't laugh) to actually retrieve the oil.

I know the picture at the top shows a pumpjack in texas, but if you scroll down to "Lifetime of an oil well" your not going to find the "pumpjack" (sound like a gay porno) doing anything oil pumping related, or in any part of the modern oil extraction process. I'm not sure what year pumpjacks "went out of style" but they remain a widely recognized symbol of the oil industry despite not really having ANY roll in modern oil recovery methods.

Basically the oil platform (derrick) creates a highly pressurized hole called an oil well, and then you hook the christmas tree up to the oil well, and the oil comes out on it's own because the well lets pressure inside the earth force the oil to the surface.

And so what happens when the pressure runs dry and there is still oil in the ground? Thats when you would use a pumpjack right? Nope! You just hook some pressurized co2, pressurized water, certain chemicals, etc. into the christmas tree, pump that crap down the hole with really high pressure, and then you pump the oil/whatever mix back to the surface, and separate the oil from the pressure inducing agents. So yeah, even tough people always associate pumpjacks with oil (my dad used to tell me it was oil every time we went past one) but in reality, pumpjacks dont really work efficiently for extracting oil, they work for natural gas.
Other techniques beside pumping pressure into the well include: downhole pumps, (a pump at the bottom of the oil well, kind of an underground pumpjack) and something called a "lift." Pumpjacks seem to get all the credit even though, chances are, every pump jack you have ever seen wasnt pumping oil, unless you were born 50 years ago OR you saw one in an oil museum. (texas really has these)

As I Texan, I can tell you that pump jacks are the primary means of oil extraction. They are everywhere down here, happily extracting barrel after barrel of oil. "Christmas tree" refers to the assembly at the top of the well, and is primarily used to extract oil that is either under natural pressure or can be pressurized. However, many older wells simply don't produce enough oil or are too deep to force it up a passive well. In those cases, pump jacks still do the heavy lifting.

In fact, directly from the link provided by malokin: "The most common method of pumping oil in land-based wells is beam pumping." (a beam pump is the same thing as a pump jack)

Meh i don't need to be such a schtickler on this, even if there are other newer beam pumps (and other "lift" techniques) that dont resemble the classic "nodding donkey" design, you can call it a pumpjack if you want, whats the big diff. People still instantly recognize the pumpjack as a symbol of oil so I'm fine with it. I just think the derrick is the symbol i recognize most, especially since i saw sadam on the news years ago burning out "his" oil wells, that image just sticks in my mind.
