Desktop window manager CPU usage during Factorio
Desktop window manager CPU usage during Factorio
When i turn on Factorio, dwm.exe CPU usage immediately raises from < 1 % to 20 - 40 % and stays there until i exit it again. Any idea why? I haven't noticed this with other games. Win8, 64bit

Are you running factorio in FullScreen or Wndowed mode?
Re: Desktop window manager CPU usage during Factorio
Tried both, no difference. When playing in windowed, if i minimalize factorio to taskbar, the dwm goes low.
Actually i was wrong in OP: dwm is calm during loading screen, it ramps up just when menu screen appears.

Re: Desktop window manager CPU usage during Factorio
After checking the internet it seems that this might be caused by some sound drivers. factorio enables sound only after loading screen and not before.
So I suggest you check Windows update to see if there might be newer drivers for your sound card available.
Also are you maybe using any software similar to Hamachi for making virtual private networks over internet. I have read several posts on forums from other indie games that such software might be causing slowdowns sometimes. There was lots of compaints about Hamatchi itself on this.

Well, my comp is relatively clean so no Hamachi, and also...the sound plays even when the game is minimalized, at the time when the usage is normal, so i doubt it's related to sound.

Re: Desktop window manager CPU usage during Factorio
If that is the case then it might be related to Windows 8 new feature for improved user expirence. I'm not sure if it is called like that. But from what I understand this feature should make various graphics (game graphics, video graphics) look much better. I'm not sure how.
But I have read several post on other forum claiming that this feature can in certain cases cause whole havoc. Games using older version of Unity game engines have quite some problems with it. In certain cases Windows even tries to enable 'Stereoscopic 3D' view even when application actually doesn't suport it. This might result in completly screwed up graphics.
As a solution pepole advised in disabling the 'Stereoscopic 3D' in graphic driver settings.

Just a matter of similar notice. Factorio is really slow when turrets are firing or accumulators feeding energy are in view.
if I see like 50 accumulators, game gets really slow
If 30-50 of my laser turrets start to shoot, it also goes to slide show.
=> yes, my pc is good enough.
