I was testing some things out in the debug menu and found this interesting tidbit when I turned on the active state:

I have smoke turned off, but these red dot's appear to show the center of the smoke particles. they move around like you would expect the smoke to.

setting 'smoke = nil' in the burner-inserter, steam-engine and boiler entity definitions removed the red circles and changed the game update measurement from 2.8ms on the map to 1.8ms (with 4700 smoke emitting entities on this test map)

That's by design. Turning off the visual render of the smoke doesn't make it not spawn.

What are your system specs? That much time spent on smoke sounds excessive.

This was testing a 633 MW power plant for colonelwill.
1700 boilers, 1300 steam engines, and 1700 burner inserters (which didn't add much in the way of smoke particles)

the system is a i5-4670k at 3.6GHZ with 16GB of 1600mhz ddr3 and a gtx970.

Do you have a copy of the map in that state? I'd like to profile it and see why it might take up that much tick time. Smoke (as you can see in the screenshot) doesn't tick like normal entities do so it shouldn't have any noticeable impact on performance.

yea- there's a special item in the testing-resources mod to make sure there's a full demand on the steam-engines. the no-smoke mod was a personal test mod to see the performance changes.
