I have tried:
Running the game as an administrator
Running in compatibility mode for W8
removing and readding the game
Updating Graphics driver

Machine spec:
I5-5200u
8gb ddr3 ram
2048mb Nvidea 840m / intel HD Graphics 5500
1tb SSD with 200GB free
Windows 10 pro - fully up to date

Got 5 great hours of gameplay before it crashed out and now crashes whenever i try and load a save game, incl one from before it went pop...

Are you by any chance trying to load a save file from New Hope level 2?
There was a bug in 0.12.25 making saves for New Hope 2 unplayable which was fixed for 0.12.26, but you need to restart that level on 0.12.26 for it to work.

Bugfixes

• Fixed the corrupted level 2 of the New hope campaign, that was producing corrupted saves. If you are already playing this level, you have to start it over, I'm sorry for the trouble.
