No mods folder after install

Post by Catfather12 »

For some reason, after installing the game, there is no mods folder, just a mods "shortcut." See attached pic. I have no idea how to put a mod in a folder that is not a folder ;) What did I do wrong?

You should be able to open the mods shortcut (the reason the shortcut is there is because the zip package uses the install directory, but the installer uses %appdata%\factorio\mods, in windows at least). If you can not open the shortcut try typing %appdata%\facotorio into the address bar and then creating a mods folder there :)

The shortcut is there just for convinience of the user. (Was I the only one who was missing shortcut to minecraft user data folder?)
The game doesn't use any of these shortcuts.

After fresh install, there is Factorio user folder in the %appdata%\Factorio, (Usually something like C:\Users\<User name>\AppData\Roaming\Factorio).
Before you start the game for the first time, it contains just the config directory.
When the game is started for the first time, directory saves and mods are created there, maybe these folders should be created directly by the installer as well to avoid confusion.
Once this happens, the mods shortcut will work and point to the mod directory in the application data.

P.S. If you want to work with mods or saves, it is more convinient to use the zip package, as it has the mods/saves/config folders located directly in the Factorio folder, you can have more independent Factorio folders , you can move it on usb/etc while keeping all the settings and mod settings.

oh yeah, I've had it installed for a while (and have started using the zip) so I'd forgotten that. Since most people are going to run Factorio at least once before installing mods it is not a big issue :)

No :)

Yes these folders should be created by installer becouse you also create shortcuts inside Factorio folder to point to them. Without these folders such shortcuts are considered invalid. Using programs like CC cleaner and similar could even lead to deletion of such shortcuts due to them being non valid.

No you were not.
At first I realy hated the fact that Minecraft gets installed into AppData folder. So for some time I even used custom Minecraft launcher to be able to have Minecraft on different location.
Lately I use Technic launcher but still have it installed in AppData folder. This is now acceptable since I leave the mod managment to be handled by launcher. But sometimes I still have to go into the save folder and manually delete some world as chosing delete workd from Minecraft doesn't always fully delete it. This could lead to some problems when creating new world with same name.

Create a folder named mods ?! That's hard, isn't it?

You'd also get help for forwarding if not every one of your posts was filled with cursing and a severe lack of punctuation. But not like that, sorry.

Mods are stored in %appdata%\Factorio\mods
If you can't find that, use C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Factorio\mods
where <username> is your windows username.

hello yes, i was making this same mistake trying to install bobsmods and finally figured out i was in the wrong directory, it isnt the /steamapps you need to place the mods in.
On Windows Vista / 7:
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Factorio\mods

On Mac OSX:
~/Library/Application\ Support/factorio/mods

to find the hidden "AppData" file in windows, after you are in your [USERNAME] heading, type into the search bar after the (OS:C\Users\[Username]) {type "\AppData" here} this will reveal the hidden folder.
Some said not to unzip the zipped mods and some say to do it. I found my game wouldnt load if i didnt unzip the folder then remove the original zip.

Now my game will run with the mods added but they wont load the mods in game on the modlist. I am using the modpack for Bobsmods. I think the reason they wont load in the game is because of the game version vs the mods versions. Not sure but Ive spent a good part of my day trying to make them work and none of them show up for me in the game. Is there something i can do in lua to make older mod versions work?

Where did you download the mods from? The ones off the bobs mods forum post should work fine: viewforum.php?f=51

[Koub] More insulting removed.

Click Start.
Search for %APPDATA%\Factorio
Inside there is a "Mods" folder.

No actually the full pack with all the mods is zipped into one folder. I had to unzip that folder for it to even load the game. Then it wouldnt show any of the mods in game. So I just removed that and downloaded the mods one by one and it worked. I only got the mods I wanted or that were dependant on other mods though.
Its the one with the "full package download" here: viewtopic.php?f=51&t=13919
