Trains: mainline priority

Post by Talguy »

In openttd, one was/is able to give trains on the main line priority over trains that want to join that line using pre-signals:

https://wiki.openttd.org/Priority

In factorio, is this possible using chain signals? As there are no bridges, and signals use section blocks, I don't think it's possible right?

No, there's no concept of priority in Factorio's signals or chain signals. Neither type of signal has any controls, you place them and they do their thing automatically.

In theory, you would want some type of train sensor signal that causes an approaching main line to disable the merging block, but not the other way around. This "onramp" would need advance notification of an approaching train from the main line so that it can stop, but should be able to merge freely when the space is open.

It miiiiiiight be possible if the circuit network can get involved and manually shut down the side line. Someone more clever than me would have to try it.
