How do people get their first alien artefact?

Firstly, I never knew that there were two ways of spelling Artefact / Artifact...

Anyway, how do people kill their first enemy base now? I can't find another way other than turrets (lasers mainly) and work my way in... but on big start area maps this is going to take forever
Oh Very Large it's ok because they spawn within your base

I just need help killing the damn things before any high level tech It's bloody hard now....

Kamikazing with cars and running away with power armor with exoskelleton and energy shields.

Submachine gun with piercing bullets, as long as they are just small biters, it is ok.
Later on, car and rocket launcher.

Hmmm.. Near the target I build a fast double wall square and I put inside 7x7 laser turrets, they cover me from worms and constantly spawning biters, and with this I destroy the houses and got the artifacts.

It makes me superfaster (more than car I think) and i go running with my shotgun destroying the bases running in circles.
