Normally, when you replace a module in a building with a module of higher quality, the original module will only be replaced once a construction bot arrives with the new module, and if the new module is not available in logistic network the original module will continue functioning indefinitely. I use this function a lot, so that my bots will upgrade the modules as they become available and I don't have to micromanage the upgrades.
However, on a space platform the original module will be removed immediately, regardless of whether the new module is available on the platform.
I'm in the process of replacing a ton of quality modules on my platform from rare/epic to legendary. It's very annoying that I have to keep going back, figuring out exactly how many new modules are available, and replacing them bit-by-bit.

Describe precisely what you are doing, what happens and what you expect to happen instead please, see 3638.

Re: [2.0.23] Module replacement on space platform works differently than on planet
I'm not really sure how to describe this more clearly, it's a pretty simple thing.
1. On a planet in remote view: Place a common Quality Module 3 in a machine. Then place a legendary Quality Module 3 in the same slot. The common module will not be removed from the machine until a bot replaces it with a legendary module. If no legendary module is available, the common module will stay indefinitely.
2. On a space platform: Place a common Quality Module 3 in a machine. Then place a legendary Quality Module 3 in the same slot. The common module will be removed from the machine immediately, even if a legendary module is not available.
There's no reason these should behave differently.
