When zooming in to the zoom-to-map view, mousing over ore will still calculate resource patch info, even if it's not shown. This can cause slowdown in specific cases, like in this map.
To recreate:
Load the attached save game.
Open map.
Zoom in enough to see individual entities.
Mouse over ore.
Observe low FPS.

I'm attaching video to see FPS drop due to mentioned problem.
(FPS drop occurs when mouse is hovering over large mixed resource patch on map.)
Basically anyone on the server confirmed that he had same issues.
It seems to me that performance drop is on client side only.
My HW specs:
CPU Intel Core i5-4570S
GPU NVIDIA GTX 960
16 GB of main memory

I too am having this problem in single player after the new update.
when zooming out my FPS drops from a solid 60FPS to about 15. after zooming back in FPS hovers at a solid 60 again.
I was not having this issue in 16.6, game ran like a dream yesterday.

GPU: NVIDIA GTX 970
16 GB of Ram

Thanks for the report.
I improved performance of resource patch info for huge patches for 0.16.8.
However in scenario like yours, the feature seem useless to me, so if we added a way to disable resource patch info from scenario script, would you use it?

Note: Mining drill circuit mode: read entire resource patch" also causes dismal performance. Maybe that could also be limited or disabled?

Easier said than done in a multiplayer game.
The only related permission is to deny all players the ability to change all circuit modes.
