I would be quite concerned about the overhead cost, in large bases there would be thousands of machines sending notifications every tick. Having a tick box to say I want this machine to send a notification would be almost as bad, they would all have to check if they should be sending notifications. ...

Vanilla does not give you access to locomotive fuel states, but there are mods that do, such as this one from klonan:

I love my artillery trains, using spidey for train defense. So satisfying when the last vestige of red is gone from the map.

Pasta con Amarula

My normal play style is very structured, neat rows, blocks squared off nice and tidy, lots of straight lines. This year I decided to do a spaghetti challenge, no straight lines, lots of unnecessary turns, everything squished together just because... Looking back, I see straight lines everywhere :D D...

I have to agree, fish are important!

My low-tech solution: drop a solar panel next to a lake, to power an inserter, which fishes fishes out of the lake and into a wooden box, which I call my cooler, to preserve my catch. Need more fish faster? Place more inserters...

A red science pack takes 5 seconds to make; a good amount of early research takes 30 seconds to consume a pack, where later the research starts taking 60 seconds per pack. You could have artillery shells that release capsules on impact. Now that would be fun. The impact harms the nest and the capsule cleans up surrounding bitters.
