Okay thanks. I was able to load from one of the autosaves and recover the game from there (so thanks for that feature! :D )

I wonder whether one of my other bug reports at https://forums.factorio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=7639 is also related. I suspected that the cars got stacked as a result ...

Hi kovarex, this game was created with version 0.11.8 so it has always been saved/loaded with the same version. While playing multiplayer, I periodically manually saved the game over that save file. I'm guessing this means that the bug lies in the code to create the save file.

Load game for multiplayer
Second player connects
For either player:
- Add fuel to the car in the middle of the screen
- Press "Enter" to get into the car
- Press "S" key to reverse the car
- Game crashes for both players
