Train should generate a stopping shadow in front of it based on braking force. Overlaps could be recorded in arrays to decide "give way" order.

In the meantime use unique station names.

The fix seems straight forward enough. Store train paths in memory or let user draw a line for trains to follow. After any construction an attempt should be made to re-connect the part between the two links, if a path was running through that piece of rail.

That would make the small pump a bad shut-off valve then? Would 3 or 4 small pumps remedy the situation?

What is a combinator useful for?

It takes input from resource container (chest, storage tank for liquids, other combinators) and outputs a custom signal. This allows programming production logic. Simply wire combinator outputs to smart inserters or simple (liquid) pumps or water pumps or lights etc to control resource consumption.
