No, it still freezes when I disable AVG entirely.

I've got AVG. I'd be surprised if that were the cause, but I'll try turning it off temporarily.

I was able to save this game right at the beginning, but now when I try to hit "save game" while loaded into this file, the game freezes.

It doesn't happen with every save (or at least very new ones; I just got the game yesterday), but it's 100% reproducible with this save.
