You are correct, it is essentialy just a file share.

The point would be to automate the process, and allow users to do it through the factorio client, rather then having to copy files around outside the game.

I am unsure if this functionality would be easily added, however It would be usefull if it were possible to run a factorio server, that didn't actually run the save like normal, but simply hosted the file, and was able to pass said save to the first user to connect to it, and then direct further cli...
