Wouldn't unicode normalization solve this problem (Thinking of NFKD)? This might need a link to libicu, but should solve almost all these problems.

This looks really nice, but I do miss the directional flows in the pipes. This was always such a nice moment when you turn on a chemical/fluid plant and you see all the water and oil rushing in.

Any chance that might be added again?

That's also a valid idea, although the paint wouldn't just "disappear", but then again, it wouldn't just "appear" as it does when you craft it in the first place
