[0.15.x] Game won't launch on 0.15.x (doesn't even create window or log)

finally, i can run factorio 0.15.x, in both steam version or standalone version.

i want to put the steps, how i fix the crash, maybe help
during 0.14.23,i can run ok. but upgrade to 0.15.x, i try so many times, but keep failure...

i try upgrade graphic driver, uninstall anti-virus soft, close windows defender, and install a standalone 0.15.3 version exe, nothing changed. so sad...

so, i think maybe i should check the crash information to fix this.
On my computer(My OS: win7-sp1.), the crash file is on this directory:C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\AppCrash_factorio.exe_8ce980408abb7e1d754895251335318d9a40b3ee_1be1e83c. the filename is: Report.wer , which is a text file, record the crash application's information.(because of this forum not allowed the wer extension, so i change the extension to log. the text language is simple-chinese)

i found two strange lines in the wer file:
LoadedModule[39]=C:\Program Files\BLDBaseService\BLDBaseService64.dll
LoadedModule[48]=C:\Program Files\HomeSafe\homesafe64.dll

sames like these are third-party soft hook into factorio.exe and cause the crash. when i uninstall these two software, and restart my computer. and 0.15.x can run ok!
PS:the BLDBaseService64 is a silent install soft, works like trojan, ...i really don't know why it on my computer.

I solved by creating a "steam_appid.txt" file in "Factorio/bin/x64" folder containing Factorio app id, in my my case 427520.

Thanks everyone, closing Razer Synapse fixed it for me as well! Had been playing with the downloaded zip file but it's nice to be able to easily play through Steam again. Hopefully devs see this and can take a look at finding a fix (though I think it's pretty low priority right now, easy enough to close it).

Same problem here.
my system:
Radeon Rx 480 (i updated the grafik software to 17.4.3) and then it dont started, the game crasht.
windows 7
32gb Ram
Cpu Amd FX 8320 8core.

so I wrote in the start options --force-opengl and the game starts normal and i can play.

i hope you solve the problem in next update guys, also here my logfile from the crash ^^
i dont use any mods or somthing like that i played only the old versions and now the 1.5x

I was having the same problems (steam looked like it was launching it but nothing happened) with 1.15.x and found Trend Officescan was the issue, unloaded Officescan and Factorio started up fine.

0.14.x (Steam) works fine with Officscan and the 0.15.x standalone installer from the website works, just not the steam version of 0.15.x. For me at least.

I had then same problem here as I was going on Steam selecting any 0.15. Version.
My firewall Trend Micro Security was just blocking it!
The solution on my computer was to add the "factorio.exe" to the white list.
How it is done:
Trend Micro Control Center

- Doubleclick on Desktop Icon "Trend Micro Maximum Security" or Tasklist Icon down right
- Click on "Device" (upper left)

- Click on Security Settings "Configure"

- enter your Password

- On the left menu select "Exception Lists" (6th from above)

- click on "+ Add" (middle)

- add your game location (f.e. E:\steam\steamapps\common\Factorio\bin\x64\factorio.exe)

OR

- add the entire steam folder (f.e. E:\Steam\steamapps\common)

so Trend Micro will not fumble with your steam games anymore, if you want to take the risk of disabling security for all your steam games!

I'm having issues specifically with 15.6. 15.6 will not load at all and get 2 error screens from Windows saying that factorio has stopped. Had no issues with 15.2. I skipped 15.3-->15.5 and went directly to 15.6 and started having the problems. Went back to 15.5 and was getting some of the problems of factorio not launching. Did a reboot of computer to install some updates and 15.5 launched no problem. It is my work laptop so I do have trend micro running.

Edit: Just switched back to 15.6. First launch nothing and then it performed a sync. Next two times launched successfully into the game. No playtime yet to see if it actually worked.

Edit 2: At home would not launch at all for any 15.X version. As it is a work computer I cannot disable Trend micro or even set factorio.exe as safe. I was finally able to get it to launch by going directly to the app directory outside of steam. Still does not consistently launch every time. Aggravating because it did launch at 15.2 when that version was first released just the last two days having this issue.

Edit 3: The standalone version from factorio website fixed the issue. So anyone else having the issue specifically with it not launching through Steam can follow the steps on the download screen to link your steam account to factorio and download a standalone version.

Issue: Launching from Steam does not launch/open the game window. Factorio remains 'running' for a few seconds in steam then exits. Launching on 0.14 works fine.

Resolution (Temp): Disabled Trend Micro Maximum Security, game launched fine straight away. Obviously the full solution is to find a fix where anti-virus can be enabled.

Troubleshooting: My issue directly relates to Trend Micro Maximum Security v11.1. It seems that Factorio 0.15.x must have changed something that calls a process impacted by anti-virus, I'll try to determine whether this is a firewall issue or a file issue but disabling my anti-virus worked for this (obviously not ideal).

i found if you whitelisted as exeptoins everything in factorio's bin folder, that the game launches fine. BTW Thank you for figuring out the initial problem was Trend Micro, which is my anti-virus as well.

So I continue to have this problem in 0.15.30 and Symantec Endpoint anti-virus. The errors occurs for both the stand alone .zip as well as the steam version of the game, the msi does work even though it still throws an error (detailed results below). I would tend to agree with you that this is not a long term solution - I fear 0.15 launching to steam and a large number of users having this problem. Is there a way to reassign this bug to open items?

That is pretty interesting information. Standalone and installer version have identical binaries, only difference is that installer by default copies the files to Program Files and standalone version has config-path.cfg file, which tells the game to search for config, saves and mods in its folder instead of %APPDATA%

Unzip it, run dump_on_exception.bat, confirm Microsoft's EULA and then run Factorio.exe from standalone .zip package. It should create Factorio.exe_######_######.dmp. If it doesn't, try to run dump_on_terminate.bat instead. Zip the dmp file and upload it here, please.

Procdump.zip contains ProcDump from Microsoft Sysinternals (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sys ... 96900.aspx) and bat files to run procdump with parameters that make it create memory dump when Factorio.exe crashes or terminates.

So. Interestingly the the .msi installed version is now also being blocked as well. The only time it ran was when it launched at the end of the installer (e.g. 'check this box to launch factorio') - all subsequent attempts to launch the game now result in the AV blocking the game.

Launching application subsequently using "run as administrator" doesnt fix the problem unfortuently.
