[2.0.60] Low FPS but only in multiplayer

I'm running a factorio server in my house. The server has plenty of CPU and ram:



and I have 2.5G networking between my desktop and the server. Server is Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS.

When playing and connected to the server, I get absolutely awful FPS (UPS seems fine, 55+). It will happen for a minute or so, then I'll get a few seconds of 60fps, then back to sub-20. This is also completely unmodded, completely vanilla + space age, and the server is the normal linux server (not LinuxGSM or anything, just the one you download from factorio.com).

Out of curiosity, I grabbed the save file off the server to try it locally, and I seem not to have these FPS issues.

I've also got a world download for you here: world zip (caution: 103MB, but it's on cloudflare so it should be fast).

And here are the log files: factorio-current.log and factorio-previous.log.

My desktop is an i9-12900k w/ an RTX 3090Ti and 64GB of ram and nvme storage, so it's ... probably not that (plus FPS is fine when playing locally).

If this is not enough information, I apologize. I'm a long-time factorio player (4,821 hours according to steam) but this is my first forum post. I've tried to provide all the information prescribed in the "Performance problems and how to report them" thread, but if you need anything else, let me know and I'll find it for you and upload it.

You are falling behind the server. If you have admin access, you can slow it down to keep up, see 68653.

Ok, sure, but... how? Why?

My desktop is a beast of a machine, and it doesn't struggle at all when running the map in single player locally.

With the same map in multiplayer under ideal conditions (2.5Gbps lan, server with plenty of overhead room), how is my client struggling? That's what I don't get.

Your single player screenshot shows it running at 53.4 ups, so your machine is unable to consistently run this map at full speed. With the server not having to render it will be faster and you will fall behind.

Ok, that makes sense. What does it mean in the multiplayer screenshot, though, when it's at 60 UPS but only 5 FPS?

It stopped rendering to catch up to the server.
