[0.9.8] Game will not start with no sound device connected

When trying to run version 0.9.8 (have not tried other versions), when there is no sound output device (speakers/headphones) present on Windows (8.1), the game fails to load with the message "Failed to install audio! (Try to start the game again)". See attached screenshot.
As soon as headphones are connected, the game starts properly again.
