i often feature starcraft in my suggestion as im a big fan and when i play factorio i got alot of factorio vibes as to imagine the engineer is a terran and the biters are zerg

Currently there are only 2 types of enemies with just higher tiers changing color and size (and obviously stats)
I know that the biters are not the main-focus but atleast add more enemy types
for example, after a specific distance there would spawn enemies that could maybe fly? (like robots) , an inspiration would be the "mutalisk" from the starcraft universe
they could fly over cliffs and water
there should be a ranged type and one that can land and tank the damage while the ranged do the damage
the enemy AI should also get more increasingly difficult
it should identify your weakpoints and target you there, sending many waves at once
In later stages of the game, there should be boss waves (you are informed 1 minute before they start coming to you), you should be able to see them and a sort of marker like in they are billions (if you have explored that chunk yet)
with flying enemies we could maybe add a Flak turret (late-game turret)
it would be a 4x4 turret which has an slow firing AOE shot
or add research to turrets being able to to target flying enemies (logically changing their appearence abit)
it would be nice to have some sort of biter queens that spread the "creep" which the biters have. (similiar to creep tumors in starcraft)
maybe add a big Hive spawner that should spawn these units
Hive spawner should also increase the limit aka. the size of attack waves (= boss waves)
