Re: Controller support

Post by ocybin »

Hey there,
I've been using Steam Controller for some time, but rarely made use of the gamepad controls, favoring KB&M bindings and input on the controller instead. This is my setup for SC : steam://controllerconfig/427520/3357215591

I always try to prioritize setting the most used bindings on buttons that are accessible while using the movement & cursor controls. I also tend to make use of regular & long press bindings, so that if a binding is never held, like Q or R, it should be overrideable by a long press that is always held and never simply press/released ( like shift/ctrl).

As far as feedback for the gamepad input mode, one of the things I don't care for is that you need to stop moving in order to access inventory/crafting etc. I noticed that while LB is held, there doesn't seem to be a specific use for either the right stick nor the buttonpad. In my own config, when I click LB it rotates, but if I hold it will give quickbar access. Turns out the easiest way with SC is to just hover the cursor over the quickbar using a mouse move position command found in steam input.

I couldn't find zoom out or in, but I typically use it a lot. I like that control while able to move.

I would think that the UI design for customizing the controls could be done a bit more like developer made action sets using Steam Input. What I mean is, there could be separate tabs for when certain game states are active, like when the inventory is open. In that game state, the controller scheme could be setup differently. It would at least be nice to see which bindings are available or irrelevant during which game states.

I hope some of this is helpful, please let me know if you have any questions about what I've said.
