By carefully controlling the input to a production area, one can place the intended output on the very same belt as the input - effectively allowing for more compact (and sometimes cheaper) production.
This of course requires accurate calculation of ratio of input items, and ratios of any machines used in the production area.
To my knowledge, there's been very little work done with this, although I do recall at least one other person doing this (or something similar) with processing units, but I haven't been able to find the post.
I'm hoping the combinator gurus of this forum can perhaps improve on the circuit setup, as it is currently a pile of spaghetti.
All of such one-belt setups consist of a
- feeder, which ensures that the production area is given exactly what raw materials are needed, without overfeeding to the point of congestion
- production head, the first bit of the production area, which at times has to be differently designed to create space on the belt
- production body, a copy-pastable segment which serves to convert the bulk of raw material into product
- filter, to recirculate any leftover raw material, lest it stays with the output and pollutes the bus
