I'm a new factorio "addict" and this is my first serious freeplay creation
Just a small research outpost to start things rolling. I bet there's a lot of stuff which could be done better

Re: Beginner base
Good start i guess. But dont be afraid to use both halfs of transport belts. Remember that inserter will put stuff on the further side of belt only but prefer to take in from the near side. But if its empty or full with what inserter doesnt need it will reach for further side.

Re: Beginner base
Sorry, but to be honest, it looks really nice.
Yeah, your factory could be more effective, but thats the charm of the game. The only tip I'll give you is to make the red and green science packs go on opposite sides of one transporter belt. By having both green sciencepacks on the left and red sciencepacks on the right (or vice versa), your inserterhands can easily reach both sciencepacks and one would not block the acces of the other.

Re: Beginner base
Thanks for your advices. I rearranged the science belts so they don't get clogged up with one science pack anymore and now it all runs like a clockwork
Today i expanded and built a small steel production facility to jumpstart my oil production bussiness:
looks cool at night
edit: upgraded the last stone furnaces to steel furnaces so a new piccy

Re: Beginner base
Drills are capable of putting things directly into furnaces, so you don't need that many inserters in the early game when you have one drill feeding one furnace directly like in the first screenshot.
Re: Beginner base
Yeah i always forget about that and start the transport belt galore
Re: Beginner base
Interesting map tho. That water on west will provide some protection.
Re: Beginner base
Yeah. Actually i started a new map. Got tired of running into trees everywhere, like a lumberjack's wet dream. In the new one i got spawned in a desert and i'm liking it more
Re: Beginner base
Nice compact design. You will need to bring your cables faster in your circuit factory though as a single long-handed inserter cannot grab enough cables to satisfy the demand of the circuit factory. In fact it is a good idea to find a design where you put your cable production directly into your circuit factory so you can take adavantage of the stack size inserter bonus (transferring more than one item).DrShame wrote:Got a bit bored so started a new game. This time i'm trying a minimalistic approach to waste less space:
Re: Beginner base
But doesn't the stack size bonus only work with chests and trains ?
Re: Beginner base
Stack size bonus works, if source and target of the inserter are on stacks.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

Re: Beginner base
This is a neat little base. It's quite beautiful with the incoming train and nicely packed, I like it!
Outputwise it'll hit a limit pretty soon but if you don't wanna rush to rocket defence its okay for a while.
Re: Beginner base
I've tidied up the place by replacing medium electric poles with substations. Added a second train stop just in case i ever run out of copper bars. Iron smelting now done with electric furnaces. Yellow factories for science packs:
Zoomed out to see the base together with the chocolate bar factory (erm copper bar smelting area):
New oil pumping spot and a solar farm, just no accumulators yet:
