Collectors have a large buffer and cant have efficiency modules. So there is a large advantage of using the buffer and not collecting stuff just to dump it over board.

As someone who only startet using circuit magic at all with space age, i found these requirements to be extremely tricky. so tricky in fact, that i think it would make a nice community challange.

so i challange you to build a more efficient collector logic then me.

my entry is posted at the end of this post as blueprint code. its a full ship with multiple collectors. however, as this is about the asteroid processing only, its enough to provide a plattform that has one collector, 3 crushers and that meet the rules.


Rules:

must have crushers for iron, ice and carbon
all crushers must have access to output of all ore types at all times
crushers must never lose access to any chunk type by belt overload (running out of collectable asteroids of course does not count)
no dumping allowed.
rules must be met with all ship storage filled to capacity (belts do not count) < this lead to confusion. the system might not jam even when all storage is filled. thats all it says, and thats redundant.


the winner will be that design which uses the least ammount of squares for combinators to control the minimum requirements.

you can improve your version by removing all the constant combinator that hold 13 and instead using just 1 and a red wire to connect to the same places.

ups, there is a bug in my design: it should have one per these rules (because only one collector counts, and there are some collectors with two constant combinators).

thank you: its 8 squares to beat then (i will not do any improvements to my entry exept for this copy and paste mistake)

No i mean you can have one for the whole ship, not one per grabby arm.

It look like someone just showed you a trick that you still don't fuly grasp x) Are you sure it's going to be ok for you to judge the entries ? Cause that happens sometimes that people make challenge but then the complexity of defining precisely the rules overwhelm them.

quite possible. as stated in the op, i am far from very experienced and so i absolutely do not expect me to win this.
anyhow, as per these rules, my design has 2 constant combinators, as one is needed to control the collector, one for the the inserters.

however, to enter this challange, you will have to provide an example blueprint.

i want to make sure i understand the rules first.

Why does one make 3 crusher one for each chunk if then there is rule saying that all crusher should have access to all output ?

I don't understand if the crusher are not going to change recipe and you only have 3 crusher, why does it matter than they have access too output to all types ?

because otherwhise you could just use 3 belts and that was borring :)
the rules as stated should result in a setup that is actually useful, space efficient and allow for chunk reprocessing.

valid question. in practical application, i do not think it was worth the trade of. but for this challenge, indeed it should not matter. i doubt that you can simplify the logic by adding a crusher recipe logic to it. but maybe the requirement for the number of crushers could be lifted.

Is this ok for your rules?

I just cut the blueprint from out of my ship. I am using only one crusher (which can switch recipes). It is for my racer ship flying 250 km/s around all planets with no stop. You can of corse add 2 another crusher for sided to meet your rules.

my solution is very similar , but it's using a dummy arithmetic combinator instead, all the value are stored in the constant, which makes it easy to change with a logistic group

Actually it can be solved with 1 combinator only. Using "read ingedients" from crushers

also seems valid. this woudl be the minimum required combinators i think to fulfill the requirements so i declare this the winner. however, clearly another challange is needed which specifies belt restrictions and considers the total area footprint as win condition.

might think about the rules and do another run in a few days.

oh just found out you don't even need to wire the crusher, you can just prime the collector with some asteroids, and make sure you leave at least 1 so it can be used to set its own filter , this way it is possible to not use 3 crushers but only 1 and change its recipe !

correct me if i am wrong, but i do not think this gets any filters for the collector when empty. that would be a jam condition.
