Because the fun in Factorio is that you can make your own, and if it works, who cares.

Actually, a messy belt maze is very fun to try to reverse engineer. I'm going to post here, when I get home, a SS of one game that I'm doing with Bobs Mod and RSO in pacific mode. That I use some challenging rules: No log bots, no main bus, no planning ahead, no changing the machine from it's original position. I also try not to demolish any trees and leave the first built belt on top as much as possible, also only make tunnels for belts and pipes when really needed. The challenge is to find room to connect them all...... I got to the point where it's really hard now. I may even start a Let's play series from this point.

We still have some belt-bus, but that wasn't planned, it just had to be done.....

wow...That is the messiest factory I have ever seen.

Main factory floor, set up prior to robots. You can see the original smelters in the 2x2 blocks, I haven't been able to replace them with electric smelters because I didn't plan for the different size. You will notice that batteries and advanced circuits get shipped via belt literally from the top of my factory to the bottom, where the science is. This was mostly built pre-robot.

The primary oil production was, similarly, built pre-robot. I'm particularly proud of the extensive pipework.

These other two oil production centers are approximately 100 and 400 tiles away, respectively. They are fully connected, by pipe, to the main oil production shown above.

Just kidding, no oops. This is on purpuse. Main bus belt is booooring. I have the most fun when I have to find solutions for the lack of space.

Also, I have set a rule that everything that is done doesn't get demolished, unless there's really no other choice. And tunnels are always as short as possible.

I can get so sloppy sometimes.... this is but one example of how lazy I can get when I don't want to deal with moving everything around to make a buffer....

So transporting ore base-wide distances probably shouldn't be done with bots. Moreso when you already in fact have a dried up conveyor system 5 feet away ready to use.


But it looks really cool.

Blue science and procesing units with no electric network! I'm going for a properly designed big factory later as soon as this has taken me far enough. I'm using burner assembly machines and burner leech mod + some more. For things like liquids and science electricity is necessary, but then I use Burner Generators from KS Power mod and hook them up to chem plants with unconnected poles only or pipe in hot water to where I need it and place a steam engine next to the electric machine. If it can be done with burner units only I do that. I use burner inserters only which means that I need to have half the belt filled with coal or another burner inserter inerting coal into the first. Since half of each belt I want to extract from is coal I have to use one belt for each ingredient. That coupled with the fact that I have no long inserters means that things that need 4 ingredients need 4 input belts and one output belt instead of just 2 input belts on one side. That means lots of extra belt mess :)
