Well, I figured it out. It was the sprite resolution setting. My laptop can handle medium but not high. Which it says in game (I only have 2GB VRAM). However the problem was I could handle the highest settings before v16 and the settings were not automatically reset, leading to the crashes. Consequently I could never access the ingame settings. The solutions that I tried from viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9300 did not work because they did not change this setting. I thought the setting "graphics-quality=low" changed this but apparantly it did not. I managed to start factorio with "--gfx-safe-mode" in the steam settings, which by the way, I have no idea what it does.

Title: Crash on startup, loading at 40%

Dear developer or forum member, I have not had this problem in >1000 hours playing (thank you for this game).

When starting factorio though Steam it stops at 40% and crashes after some time (and also crashes my laptop, but I think that's an unrelated laptop issue).

I have this problem since updating to version 16. I thought it might be an issue of the 16.16 experimental version, so I went back to 16.15. And while it worked the first time I started up factorio, subsequent startups (after closing the application) did not work. Same when I went back to 16.16 again: starting up factorio via steam worked once, but on subsequent times it crashes.

Things I've tried:

-Sollutions from this topic: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9300 I've tried every change to the config file described.
-Updating drivers


I've got a laptop with an intel i7 2.6 GH; 8 GB RAM; and Nvidea Geforce GTX 960M graphics card
