At the moment, you can only connect to a server using an IP or IP:port.
I propose adding hostname and hostname:port to that.
This is far more convenient if you plan to host a 24/7 server on the internet. People wouldn't have to remember an IP, but instead a domain name, e.g. "johnmaddenfactorio.com".
On top of that, it makes it a bit easier to start LAN games, since then you can just tell other people what your computer name is instead of having to look up your IP.

Re: Allow connecting to a server using hostname instead of I
I agree, I have a hostname for the reason of telling people rather than my IP, Before I got this though, I used to have a Dynamic IP, and for the sake of not having to look it up every time someone connected, I had a DYNDNS service running, which binds my dynamic IP to a static hostname.

I'll do this together with the IPv6 support.... not now, though.

Another sugestion on the same subject... Remember previously entered addresses. Ideally with some sort of list, though even just the last one entered would be a step forward.

Already done for 0.12, don't know where I saw it though, but it was by Kovarex.bobingabout wrote:Another sugestion on the same subject... Remember previously entered addresses. Ideally with some sort of list, though even just the last one entered would be a step forward.

Multiplayer Connection Supports DNS Names

It's only for the few who actually went through the effort, but the game should at least accept a DNS name of a server if people choose to opt for the work required to get a domain name for their server.

The whitest husky around.
Re: Allow connecting to a server using hostname instead of IP
You can use programs to turn domains to IPs such as No-ip or whatever, but I am not sure if these work on Factorioterrible wrote:At the moment, you can only connect to a server using an IP or IP:port.
