WHAT I'd wish for:
For a given train lenght (set in "Settings -> Interface -> Train visualiztation lenght"), show a number on each wagon indexing it's position.
This is, how it looks at the moment:

WHY:
Well .. because it's (probably?) easy to do and helps the player to visually keep track of spacing between track segments on the trails.
I think, it's quiet annoying to keep track of correct spacing for signals / stations / switches, especially when using trains with variable length or very long trains, as i often miscounted. Also it's taking a heavy toll on my (your?) sanity and concentration when building large train setups.
I'm sure, this Feature will help a lot of players. Honestly, I think, the question should be "why not to do it?", instead of "why to do it?"
Also: Make it optional (switchable in settings) if possible?
