Objective generator for free play

Keep the player going in free play with an optional objective generator.

The game could take a look at what you're currently producing what you're close to in tech, and generate an objective which is somewhere above those things.

An objective could be "Get your wall production above 200/min" or "Stock up 1000 batteries" - like in the campaign missions. You would have a fairly generous time limit to meet the objective. As time goes on the objectives could be harder and harder. Optionally, you could set it to be a condition that you lose the game if you failed to meet an objective, which I think is a bit more balanced and fun than an 'Ironman' mode, given that the game is about making a nice big efficient factory rather than avoiding death (for which the most common cause is probably walking into the side of moving trains).

It could be a map option, maybe it could be activated through building some building which allows you to be in contact with the colonists you're preparing the planet for.

Would this be a difficult thing to add? It would add some nice variety to free play.

Yeah, it would basically be like that, but as part of a random map generation, and where sometimes the constraints are in terms of production/minute sustained over a certain period, instead of absolute amounts.

Also maybe succeeding at an objective could give victory points/prestige/fame, so you have some measure for a "high score" - it would be more of a survival mode, for those of us who get bored after long enough in sandbox and want to get fun from "not losing", like in games like Dwarf Fortress.
