I just started a new map with a lot of water (map see below).
Besides of noticing, I got stuck there, it lead me to the idea of building up water routes by cargo ships.
New challenges awaiting !
A player ability for swimming would be a nice start, just for getting off of that island.

I know (I had to restart the map like 10 times until I got a usable map, because I had "a lot of water" in my map config).

But this thread is for talking abount the possibilities of USING the water, not about the "island-problem".

There's that one, but I think for the most part I get the feeling this is an idea on which there is either not a lot to say or it was discussed outside the suggestion forum. In any case, yeah it's interesting and it could be done well but I have the vague sense the devs are just waiting until they have a good spot for it. (And preexisitng gameplay and code infrastructure.) Wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that Trains were actually preliminarily balanced against it. (Would explain the cargo size.)

That said, as long as I'm linking threads, This one may not be about ships per say, but it absolutely must be mentioned.

EDIT: As far as "gameplay infrastructure" I basically mean things like biter pirates and other threats at sea... Okay, they'd probably just be amphibious enemies but come on Biter Pirates.

I flying cargoship would be fun too. Maybe this one is easier to program. Another problem would be the balancing "train vs FlyingCargoship"

Agree. The water definitely needs more usage. Except water source for boilers and some industry it is completely useless now. Bridges for short distances, boats for long, some resources obtainable (only) from water or at least oil deposits for oil platforms. Or underwater ore deposits with difficult mining procedure for hardcore water maps. :-)
Sometimes modifying mods makes more fun than playing them. ;-)

Cant we get wooden boats at least :|; it sucks if you spawn on a island and sucks more if you spawn on a Big Island and don't know about till later.

I imagine they'll need sea-based biters, speed boat(similar to the car on land), destroyer(similar to tank on land), and cargo ships(similar to trains on land).
