GUI feedback and ideas for improvments

Post by Lubricus »

1. Window that show current map settings. Could be together with map seed and mod list.
The new advanced settings for map creation with options for resources and biters is great. Now I have forgot what setting I used when starting the factory so i can't just tweek them for my next play.

2. I like the idea that everything is "physical" object that you move around with the hands. The problem is that it's not that practical. Especially with the new pipette tool (that is great) the tool belt is mostly a pain and the items that is there constantly swap around. So the tool-belt just makes it harder to find things and it would be easier with just one inventory. I think that have to be abandon and let the toolbelt and blueprint books and make them more like toolbars.
I like all the ideas in FFF https://www.factorio.com/blog/post/fff-191

For blue-prints I now use the shared-blueprint for the prints I don't want to disappear. Blue print escaping books is discussed hear. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=49131
And then the duplicating of the print is just a hassle. Discussed hear viewtopic.php?f=6&t=49591

3. Signs that machines and station is on or off. There are signs that shows if stuff is running or not. The problem is that they often are difficult to see. The train-stations have blinking light but they are so minute so it is easier to check if the name is red on the map. The chemical plants have some green yellowish stuff in the hole but that is also way to difficult to notice so I usually open the item menu to check.

4. The pipette tool. The pipette tool is great and mostly replace the tool-belt for me. I have never used the function to get the mining drills when pipetting the ore fields so it feels superfluous.

5. Start game menu. 90% of the cases when I start the game I just want to continue my current factory. Then I first have to click "play" that is on the top of the menu so it's OK. Then "Load game" that is the fourth option in the menu that is a little to far down and difficult to find.

6. Combat controls. The controls when fighting biters feels awkward the controls are configured first to build the combat has lower priority and will be bad. Could it be possible to have two controls settings you switch between? Like a combat mode and build mode so you don't accidentally shoot stuff when building and can have good controls when fighting.

The shift+ right mouse button and shift+ left mouse button to copy settings is great but there is no feedback that something actually happening. Could a simple sound or flashing on the object that gets it's settings change help?
It's nitpicky stuff, the game is already so great that it's the tiny details that can make it even better.
