The planet is round! / Map wrap-around

Post by EditorRUS »

The planet you crashed into is most probably round. In elliptic geometry (or you can say on a planet) there are no parallel lines because any line will eventually intersect itself. Or simply "if you go in one direction for long enough you will return to where you started from". In Factorio you can specify map size. Now, black corners are not fun enough because they are very explicit and stupid. My suggestion is to make the map to have no ends by making the map looped. Map height and map width will therefore mean planet's minor axis and major axis.

The idea itself is of no practical value (probably, I can't think of one) and is purely for fun/realism.
The amount of code this idea needs is probably ridiculous too and so it won't be implemented any time soon.
I don't know why I came up with this, probably because I am stupid.
But hey, at least you can make a giant belt that connects to itself without ever having to change the direction of the belt's contents!

It wouldn't be hard to make the player movement wrap but things like robots, belts, inserters, biters and such would never happen.

That being said: I don't see any real value in making it work like this.
If you want to get ahold of me I'm almost always on Discord.

A planet with any real gravity is typically too big to just walk around. If you leave the map size as infinite it's pretty hard to reach the edge through natural gameplay.

There are some benefits for multiplayer so players don't get any advantages based on location (for example it's easier to defend a corner than a side or the centre) but not sure it's worth the hassle. Factorio isn't really a PvP game and trying to get it to behave as such is a waste of time IMO.
Money might be the root of all evil, but ignorance is the heart.

If you wrap the edges of the map, your planet is not round. It is a torus.

Mmmmm... Donuts....

:)

Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.
