So, the modular armor concept is great! You right click you armor and you can add items to it!
So, what about modular vehicles? Could we have a "car-engine-upgrade", "car-chainsaw" (to cut trees or run over biters), or a "portable-fusion-reactor" right inside the car?
And "plugins" for turrets would be awesome! It could open the possibilities to a lot of tower defense concepts! A turret that damages on area! A turret that stops biters! A turret that makes a loud noise to attract biters! A turret that fires missiles! A turret that heals friendly units (in case we have RTS-kind of stuff)! Etc!

Vehicles will have a major rebalance in the future. Depending on which modular components may or may not be worthwhile.
Car itself is fine as it is. Trains could benefit from some variability as well as future tanks.
I believe turrets might be bad for modular upgrades. Main difference here is stationary vs. mobile. Stationary object could be placed in strategic form and incorporated into larger complexes - this is how they achieve their "modularity". Mobile object lack that modular addons viable.
