Playing Factorio multiplayer has been a good experience, with the exception of when players join. My brother has the misfortune of an internet connection with a very high packet loss rate. This causes the transfer to go very slowly, and we both watch the download bar go forward only to slide backwards with packet loss. It may be more appropriate to use TCP for map transfer if possible, or to provide this as an option for map transfer in server config.
Additionally, when playing with a server on a local network, I noticed strangely slow transfer. These computers are connected by gigabit ethernet, and I regularly achieve 100MB/s disk transfers between them. Factorio transfer takes as long for me on a local network as a friend with a 10Mbps download connection, capping out at ~780KB/s for both LAN and WAN transfer.
Loving the game

Re: Improve Map Transfer Rate
I think increasing the stability and speed of the current net-layer should be #1 prio after v0.13, because there are many players, that have problems with it.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.
