Vehicles from parts

Post by ssilk » Mon Feb 10, 2014 10:57 pm

There is a game I like very much: "Hill climb racing" (http://www.fingersoft.net/). The advantage of the car depends on the parts and how much of them you combine together (Tip : Use the buggy on the moon, brings most points).
How about vehicles, which are created from different parts. And the characteristic of the end product depends on the parts.

Lets say there are 10 parts, on which a vehicle can be constructed:
- wheels
- brakes
- steering
- chassis
- motor
- shock absorbers
- gearing
- protection
- weapons
- inventory

Also some other characteristics like "connectors with other vehicles", "swimming", "insertable" etc. But the main idea is, that every part can be researched or whatever to a better type. Lets say, there are not 20 tiers for each part, only 2-5. And most parts can be reused in other vehicles. So that you can drive in the end faster than the train with a high precision.

Lets say this vehicle needs 10 steps to be produced (1 for every part): Some very slow belt. You need to fill all stations with the right amount of items and then Inserters put things at the right place, at the end there is a new car.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

Sounds interesting, but might be a little bit too complex. I mean in terms of scope for one 'minor' aspect of the game. I'd say if it were to be done, it should be done in a way that amplifies the factory aspects rather than strictly vehicles for the player to use.

Yea, for only one aspect, yes. But we need also trains, other type of transport, eventually other bots and .... Rockets, which fly us to the stars!

Maybe ten parts is too much. Maybe completely free stacking together is too much. But what I really think that this is good is this factory, with a belt on, like a big car factory, or like in Star Wars. Something which I can try to optimize endlessly or just use a blueprint.

For a start, a modular car, just like the modular armor, would be nice. You could insert stuff like:

- Energy shields
- Electricity generator (uses the car fuel)
- Other generators used in armor
- Laser defense
- Machine gun
- Rocket launcher
- Speed module (makes the car faster)
- Effectivity module (uses less fuel)
- Car-armor
- better lights

The same thing could be used for trains, so they could defend themselves against small alien attacks.

Yeah, exactly, this is the way, we can get to this target: First a grid, where we can place the needed items and later then, also the position in the grid and which connections are done is important and too complicated to make it every time by hand. And there are parts of parts, like wings, or a body: http://www.addictinggames.com/action-ga ... 2-game.jsp
