Gun Wagons

Gun Wagons would be a new addon to trains. It would allow you to fit gun turrets onto trains, although the gun turrets when on the trains would have reduced range. They would be designed to defend your train from worms or spitters, while not being intended for raiding enemy colonies. In addition, these could allow a new way to defend bases.

Its come up before in discussions, and people have tried doing it as game mods.

Unfortunately right now there is no good way to do this. The code used for turrets was not designed to be fired while moving. Mods that have attempted to create such a thing relied on deleting and re-placing the turret at regular intervals as the train moved, leading to an obvious desync in where it fired from vs where the graphics show the gun as being located at.

Normally biters won't attack moving trains though, to the point where a train can be used to mow down an advancing horde of biters without issue. But when the train stops it becomes vulnerable.

So in my line of thought, and as a workaround to the inability to place a turret on a moving train, simply make the turret cars only usable when the train is stopped.

Like so the train defends itself when waiting on a siding, but cannot fire while moving- and normally won't need to anyway.
In my mind, Steam is the eternal king of the railway.
