These details are great when you know the game intimately, but these sorts of details might not occur to a newer user.

Which was the whole point.

There is value in creating an intricate game with clever puzzles to solve, but the UI itself should be clean, consistent as possible, and simple to understand. I've yet to meet anyone who enjoys trying to reverse engineers someone elses idea of what a UI should do - especially when something is not working in a way you don't expect and it might not occur to them that could be the root of their misunderstanding.

Train signals are a great example of that. You're thinking in terms of trains and signals, not in terms of a user interface doing unexpected things.

I find it interesting that this is a concept that is having a hard time landing. Why, I don't know. As much as I love factorio, I'm not sure I'm that invested though to find out. I've done my part as far as I'm concerned.
